The Direction of Light
A workshop with students of the Art University Damascus and students of Hochschule für Bildende Künste Dresden (studio Brandmeier)
The workshop called The Direction of Light addresses both meanings of the term direction. Direction means course and orientation, like the route of light, the beam, and it also means instruction and assignment, like the French word „Regie“. Both understandings may function as a subject or just a starting point for the artistic
work of the participants.
„Light“ is a most simple and obvious topic for a workshop. It focuses on the very conditions
of any visual art and it turns these conditions into the subject of the students´ work. The theme of the workshop The Direction of Light is meant as a theme which
is not shaped by given concepts and opinions, but by the given facts, and the actual
conditions we share.
On a second level the topic„Light“ offers many opportunities to study Syrian historical
and contemporary architecture, and gives us a starting point for the understanding
of Arabic culture. But beside this, it most of all offers a view on every day’s life
and the very global use of light – like traffic lights, mirrors and flashlights, candles
and TVs.
The Direction of Light could be the focus not only for the things observed in this workshop
but also for the tools we work with. I would leave it up to the individual choice
of every student which material and media he or she wants to use, but I explicitly
propose to include photography and video, projectors and screens as genuine tools
of light and hereby the appropriate media for this research.
